Eager to make up for their disappointing 1-1 draw against Israel in
previous week, Portugal immediately set themselves into an attacking
more from kick off, despite not having their star player, Cristiano
Ronaldo in the line up as he was serving his suspension. The home side
didn't seem to face much trouble in dominating proceedings, before
eventually getting in front on the hour mark through Silvestre Varela.
Six minutes later, the host extended their advantage, this time from an
effort by Nani.
Leading by two goals in the first period were not enough for Portugal as they kept on playing their attacking game and eventually sealing that match with a third goal, which was scored by Helder Postiga on 79 minutes. Unfortunately, that comfortable win couldn't give them a direct ticket to Brazil as that success was grabbed by their rival, Russia, which finished in the top of table with one point above the European Selecao.
