Saint-Etienne team need to play best to remain undefeated in this game with the current champions. Coach, Genesi’s players, have only one defeat this season, which took place in the championship by the leading Paris Saint Germain away, but they have also played four draws in the last five matches. They did it twice in UEFA Europa league, against Apollon away and at home with the Italian team, Atalanta, while, in the championship, they played 3-3, against Dijon and Angers.

On the other side and, as for the current French champions, this two-season break was certainly very welcome in their team, given that they had two very bad performances at home. First, AS Monaco was defeated in the UEFA Champions League with 3-0 by Porto, which has significantly reduced the team's chances of being ranked in the knockout phase, so they played only 1-1 in the championship against Montpellier, and their backlog for the leading PSG is again 03 points.
That is why coach Jardim now has the imperative of good result in duel with Olympique Lyon, which is on the other hand playing unpredictable, and it will be very interesting to see how this big French Ligue 1 derby will end. The last few months were really unsuccessful for Olympique Marseille, after a great start of the season they had small crisis and lost their 1st place in Ligue 1. But it looks like that they are in form again, they won two from last 3 games played. They drew goalless in a tough home game against Lyon and won impressive in both away games against Toulouse (1:6) and Reims (0:4). 21 Years old M. Batshuayi scored 4 goals in these two games, but we are expecting A. Gignac to start against PSG. He’s the top scorer of Marseille with 16 goals scored in Ligue 1.

In front of their home fans they are without a victory in the last 3 games. They drew with Lyon and Reims, they also lost to Caen. Earlier they had streak of 11 home consecutive wins. In home table they are on the 3rd place with 35 points gained from 15 games (11 wins, 2 draws and 2 loses). In Ligue 1 table, OM are on the 3rd place too, just 2 points bellow the leaders from Paris, in case of a victory they could become competition leaders. They won 3 from last 5 games played against PSG at Stade Vélodrome.

After a really poor start of the season with lots of draws, PSG now are totally different team. They achieved UCL  quarter-finals after two great games against Chelsea. In the French league 1 they caught up with the leading squad (Lyon) and after last match-day they are ahead of them. Before the international break they won 3:1 against Lorient, all goals were scored by Ibrahimović, who also scored three goals in National Team games last week. As I wrote they are on the top of the league table, they collected 59 points in 20 games. In away table they are in the 4th place, with 22 points gained from 15 games (5 wins, 7 draws and 3 loses). They gained just 2 points from last 3 away games in Ligue 1. They lost to Bordeaux and drew away against both AS Monaco and Lyon. PSG won last 6 games in all competitions against Marseille. Interestingly they scored 2 goals in last 8 games against them, that means that they scored 16 goals, while conceded just 4. There are few injured players in the team, but Paris Saint-Germain have an really large and strong team, so they can replace them easily.

Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the last 8 of the CDF on Wednesday, using two first-half goals from Yohan Cabaye and Edinson Cavani to secure their place in the quarterfinals. The Uruguayan hit-man once again thrived in the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and will have picked up some much-needed confidence when he will surely be thrust back to the wing here as the Swede is set to return. The debate rages on as to whether the Parisians have been better with or without their superstar striker this season, as Wednesday witnessed a flowing team full of cohesion opposed to a collection of stars. But that is neither here nor there as he remains their best player and won’t be losing his starting job, and the hosts must now turn their attention to Caen. They have already conquered them this season in the reverse fixture, comfortably downing them 2:0 with goals from Lucas and Marquinhos. It marked the 6th-straight match against Caen in which the hosts have scored at least 2 goals. Furthermore, they are unbeaten in their last 7 Ligue 1 clashes with the travelers, managing to take all 3 points on 6 of those occasions. Something similar is the expected outcome here in the French capital.

Caen team take their 4-match winning streak and a load of confidence to the Parc des Princes. They have spring-boarded themselves away from the relegation zone a bit and now sit at 4 points above the dreaded bottom 3. For a team that had drawn 3 and lost 8 of their previous 11 competitive fixtures, it has been a remarkable turnaround for Patrice Garande and his troops. They have outscored their opponents 11 to 2 over their 4-game winning streak, most notably conquering ASSE, 1:0. Julian Feret has been on absolute tear and is in large part the main culprit in their run of good form, scoring 4 goals and adding 3 assists over just their last 4 outings. Furthermore, they will take Ligue 1’s 2nd-highest scoring away tally to the French capital here, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see them find a way to break down the hosts once or twice. However, it’s important to note that the visitors have taken just 4 total points from 11 matches this season against the top half of the table, and Saturday should see their winning streak snapped at 4.

Paris Saint-Germain team is welcoming this duel after their latest series of five consecutive wins, three in the Championship and two in the UCL over APOEL, after which they together with FC Barcelona already ensured a place in the knockout phase. It just means that they can now totally devoted their attention to the fight for the first place in France Ligue 1, where their next rivals OM are currently at, so we are absolutely sure that they are going to give their best in order to come closer one point.
Here we need to mention the fact that the current French champions still have not felt the bitterness of defeat this season, though they are constantly playing on two very strong fronts, but it is certainly largely to thanks to their wide bench, so coach Blanc has an adequate alternative for each position at any moment. Therefore, the absence of Ibrahimovic for more than a month was not felt so much in a game, while we should also add that the injured midfielder Verratti is still questionable for this match.
As for the guests from Olympique Marseille, we have already said that they are after 12 rounds on the leading position in Ligue 1, with four points more than PSG and five compared to the third Lyon, which defeated them two weeks ago in the championship, after their stunning series of eight consecutive victories. This has certainly disrupted them, which was best confirmed by the next match in the French League Cup where they were defeated away at Rennes while they last weekend with a lot of trouble came to the minimum home triumph over Lens in the Championship.
But the most important thing for a coach Bielsa is that they managed to come back after two straight defeats, but also to the four points of excess entering this big derby with Paris Saint-Germain, so they will certainly be somewhat relieved at Princes Park. On the other hand, they are certainly not very happy by the fact that their top scorer of France Ligue 1, Gignac, has not scored a goal in three consecutive matches, so he will definitely need extra help this time in the offensive part. Reims finished the last years season 2013/14 on an eleventh position. They were able to collect 48 points and played a pretty average season with 12 wins 12 draws and 14 losses. The distance between them and the relegation ranks were 8 points. They will now meet the reigning champions in game one. If this is an advantage is at least questionable. Last season playing with PSG they lost twice with 0:3. But there is no need for desperation, the last win against PSG dates from 2013, when they were able to beat them with 1:0 playing at home. However the last test matches have not been terrific. Against the FC Loriont they played 1:1 just as against the FC Metz some days before. They even lost one of their last three games against the fifth league club – ASNL with 0:1. 

The French champion of the past two years – PSG – has not yet finished its transfer-plans for the new season. The questions that remain still are: who else will leave the club and who will be transferred to PSG? Maybe Angel di Maria? At least the international press assumes this. But in fact there is no time for questioning, the French season kicks off on Friday the 8th and Paris will have to travel to Stade Reims. Therefore they will be eager to win this first encounter and to have a good start in the new season. Actually they already won their first title at the „Trophée des Champions 2014“ against EA Guingamp with 2:0. Superstar Ibrahimovic scored twice and the match was almost won after 20 minutes. In addition PSG had to play in Hongkong against Kitchee, where they also won with a fabulous 6:2. Some days before Nicce was beaten with a 2:1. They seem to be well prepared for the start of the Ligue 1 season 2014/15.

PSG get set to kick off competitive play for the 2014-2015 season and will see out their first official match this weekend in the Trophee des Champions against Guingamp. They qualified for the single-match final by claiming the 2013-2014 Ligue 1 title, finishing a comfortable 9 points above AS Monaco, thanks in large part to the 26 league goals that Swedish international Ibrahimovic tallied up. The powerful hit-man is one of the best in the world at his trade, and he proved so yet again last time out with a hat-trick in their 6:2 friendly defeat of Hong Kong-based club Kitchee. The forward is in ominous form, and Sweden’s exclusion from the 2014 World Cup has him refreshed and raring to go for the new campaign. Young phenom Jean-Christophe Bahebeck meanwhile has spent the last two seasons out on loan from the French club, but after netting in every pre-season match thus far, manager Laurant Blanc has a welcome headache of a decision on his mind. The youngster very well could see the starting XI here for the cup match.

Guingamp fell to a disappointing yet relieving 16th place finish in Ligue 1 last season, barely staving off relegation by just 2 points. Solid home form that saw them bag 28 of their 42 points ultimately saved them, as 6 vital points from 2 home matches in the late going proved critical to their safety. However, for purposes of this contest, they were simply woeful on the road, and while this match will be played in Beijing, they still tend to play a lower quality of football outside the Stade de Roudourou. While they did win 4 straight road games in last season’s Coupe de France, they were all against lower level competition. That said, an impressive victory over AS Monaco in the semi-finals in which leading goal scorer Mustapha Yatabare netted two of their three goals demonstrated this side’s ability to pull off an upset. However, that is a tough ask against a far and away more talented roster in this weekend’s opponent from the French capital.

Of course that current French champions and this time don’t even think about anything else except a certain victory, as it is the only way to maintain a solid lead over the second-placed Lille, which currently stands on four points. Coach Blanca’s players are still undefeated this season and in the championship have effect of 10 wins and four draws.  Regarding their performances in the Europe League, they were not overly convincing but after recent victory over Betis at home have managed to secure placement in the next round, given that before the end of the round have four points more than third Guimaraes. It means a lot to them in terms of self-confidence ahead of this difficult away match at the Parc des Princes, where coach Guard can count on almost all best players apart from before injured defender Dabo.

Marseille have 3-2-1 so far and are as expected in the top just below Monaco and PSG. They are not in very good form as they have 0-2-2 in last four matches. But they have met good opposition in the two matches they lost, they lost 2-1 at home to Monaco and then 2-1 at home to Arsenal in the Champions League. Last match ended 0-0 away to Bastia, and the fans are surely expecting better results in future matches. Saint Etienne are 4-0-2 and a third place is better than expected before the season started, though they have mainly met teams that are currently in bottom half of the table. They are 2-0-1 away so far this season, last weekend they lost 2-1 away to Toulouse. 

 

The teams have met many times before, and Marseille have the upper hand with 12-6-7. At home Marseille have not lost to Saint Etienne and it is 9-3-0. For Marseille the forward Gignac is out (he has featured in all six league matches plus against Arsenal), but attacking midfielder Payet should be back again. Saint Etienne will be without the forward and previous Marseille player Brandao, plus defender Perrin (he played in five of the matches) is also absent.
