Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid
Competition: Champions League Final
Competition: Champions League Final
For Real Madrid winning the Champions League is a make or break: if they
will succeed they will make history of their club by securing ‘La
Decima’ - the 10th European Cup success. They have looked by far the
strongest side as proven by the hammering against Bayern in Munich.
Before of that they ahave eliminate Dortmund with a 3-0 home win but
they made life difficult when losing the return 2-0.
Xabi Alonso received his third yellow card of the competition in Munich
and is suspended. Jesé is Carlo Ancelotti's only main injury concern
while Morata, Benzema and Lopez should be regularly available for
selection.
Atletico Madrid team are coming off their draw against
FC Barcelona, which netted them the La Liga title. They knocked out a
number of former champions along the way to the UCL final: AC Milan,
Barcelona and Chelsea. Their performance at Stamford Bridge in the
second leg of their semi-final showed how deadly they can be but the
likely absence of Diego Costa could make this a step too far against
their cross city rivals.
Simeone is not yet certain if he will be able to count on their main star Diego Costa and on the versatile Turkish midfielder Arda Turan. Raúl García could therefore start alongside David Villa in attack.
The Colchoneros are particularly strong in defence and conceded just 26 times domestically in Primera Division. They kept 20 clean sheets and failed to score in just five of their league games. Furthermore, they are the only unbeaten team in the Champions League this term. Traveling is no concern as Atletico have found the net in all of their European matches outside of Madrid this season.
Real Madrid won a Copa del Rey tie by 5-0 on aggregate (but three of those came on own goals) and have only 2 of their last 30 competitive games against their city rivals. Anyway, Atletico have lost just two of their last six encounters with their more decorated neighbours.
